Bringing Education to the Children of Nigeria.

Joanne Chinkers is a certified Special Education teacher with over 30 years of classroom experience. What began as a one-year challenge in 2010 - to improve education at one of the first Christian schools built in the interior region of Nigeria - became a lifelong calling. After returning in 2012 and realizing her call was not short-term, she joined FIRE International as a full-time missionary in 2013. She  has been rooted in Jebba, Kwara State ever since.

Reaching the Children of Jebba with the Gospel.

Joanne's work centers on two things raising the standard of education and making sure every child in Jebba hears the name of Jesus. Through her annual Good News outreach, over 2,000 children a day are taught about Jesus and fed a wholesome meal. Last year, 800 responded to the message. Smaller Good News Clubs now run year-round, keeping children connected to the gospel long after the outreach ends. Every child who comes through her doors is seen, known, and loved.

Word of Life Academy, Kwara State.

Word of Life Academy is one of the first Christian schools built in the interior region of Nigeria. Through teacher training, classroom coaching, and reading and math programs, Joanne has seen dramatic improvements in both teacher and student performance.  Beyond the classroom, Joanne has personally sponsored and cared for multiple children from the surrounding villages - walking with them from primary school all the way through higher education.
